Give both Step 1 and 2 on the same day. Remember to give the child plenty of time and do not try to alter their decisions. Be neutral when asking questions. This is all about their creative process... "For young children, creating is a natural process." - Maryanne E. Hoffman
Step 1:
Give the child seven color of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) and gray, black, brown and white. Any material will do - crayons, pastels, paints, colored pencils, markers
Ask the child to make their own special imaginary rainbow. Paint the rainbow with their favorite color on top and then their next favorite color...to their least favorite on the bottom. The rainbow will use all the colors, so it should be made of 11 stripes. Do not discourage the child's decisions. If they choose the top to be black or brown, go with it. They can only use each color once.
Step 2:
Have the child respond spontaneously to these series of questions...
1. Which do you enjoy the best : sunrise, high noon, sunset?
2. Whate is your favorite season : winter, spring, summer, fall?
3. Which color do you like the best : red, yellow, blue?
4. Which color do you like the best : orange, purple, green?
5. Which color do you like best : black, gray, white?
6. What two combined colors do you like best? (written like this...ex. Blue-Green, Red-Purple, Yellow-Indigo)
7. Which shape is most appealing to you : circle, square, triangle, oval, hexagon, rectangle, crescent? (Show drawings)
8. Which line is most appealing to you : horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curved, jagged, wavy, check mark? (Show drawings)
...Now everyone please feel free to send me or post your child's results. (list the age, sex, and ethnicity of each child along with their results)
Thank you for taking the time to complete this questionaire/survey.
